Gallbladder Ultrasound

A gallbladder ultrasound is a limited abdominal ultrasound which includes images of the gallbladder, biliary system and liver.

Patient Preparation

Ultrasound preparation depends upon the area of the body being examined. Below, you will find patient preparation instructions for a gallbladder exam. We ask that you please do not bring children to your ultrasound exam.

Night before exam:

  • Fat-free dinner
  • Non-fat liquids permitted until 6 hours prior to exam
  • Then, nothing by mouth. If necessary, medications with a small amount of water can be taken.

History of previous exams

Have you had any prior studies of the area we are going to be imaging? It is important to give this information to SSR prior to your exam. Be sure to include the facility name and approximate dates/years of exams. This helps us to locate the correct studies and have them available for our Radiologists so they can compare and note any changes that have occurred. If you have a copy of your images, please bring them with you to your appointment.

Exam

  • When you arrive at SSR, a receptionist will give you all of your registration materials. To expedite check in, these materials can be printed online and filled out prior to your appointment by clicking here.
  • After you have checked in you will be escorted into the examination room. After lying down, a warm gel will be applied to the area of your body being studied.
  • The images of your body will appear on a monitor similar to a TV screen. The sonographer will give you special instructions, such as breath holding or turning from one side to another. Your images are reviewed by a Radiologist, who will dictate a report to your referring clinician.
  • The examination takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

Results

The Radiologist will prepare a formal written report that will be sent to your clinician within 2 to 3 days. Your clinician will then discuss these results with you.
